THE COMPANY’S GLOBAL HERITAGE AND GROWTH

The Coca-Cola system represents one of the largest and most popular brands in the world, with more than 130 years of heritage and history. It all started in Atlanta in 1886, when John Pemberton, a pharmacist, made a caramel-coloured refreshing drink and mixed it with soda. After tasting, the product was rated as excellent and its sales were lunched at the price of 5 cents per glass. Frank Robinson, Pemberton’s accountant, named the drink Coca-Cola and designed the logo we all know today.

However, Coca-Cola became a nation-wide success thanks to Asa Candler, who designed coupons for free-of-charge consumption. Soon after, two lawyers, Benjamin F. Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead, obtained exclusive bottling rights and by 1920 a network of plants producing Coke was established across the USA. Just before that, the glass bottle, also known as the Contour bottle, was invented, as the most popular type of packaging ever.

The core of this amazing story lies in the incredible innovation, which has been an inspiration for creating brands and beverages enjoyed by billions of people in more than 200 countries worldwide up to the present day. Thanks to our determination to offer top-quality drinks and create great and exciting marketing stories, Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero (Diet Coke), Sprite and Fanta are four out of five most popular non-alcoholic carbonated drinks in the world. In addition to these, we refresh people across the globe with waters, fruit drinks, juices and innovative products which, just like Coca-Cola did more than a century ago, set new benchmarks and create new habits and preferences.

MEET THE COCA-COLA SYSTEM

The Coca-Cola Company is the global owner of the brands and is in charge of devising strategic marketing campaigns, brand management, advertising, consumer promotions, public relations and packaging improvement and market research strategies. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, where the recipe for Coca-Cola is safeguarded, as it has never been revealed to the public.

The Coca-Cola Company executes the beverage production in cooperation with its partners, bottling plants across the world, which are licensed to produce the brands we own.

In Serbia, the Coca-Cola system consists of The Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola HBC Serbia, a member of the large Coca-Cola HBC Group, present in 28 countries at 3 continents. Coca-Cola HBC Serbia is in charge of production, sales and distribution of Coca-Cola drinks in Serbia, as well as of implementing numerous joint CSR programmes. As one of the leaders in the soft beverages industry in the country, we have a market share of more than 30 percent.

In Belgrade, carbonated beverages and juices are produced in the Juice Excellence Center, while Rosa spring water, the leader among non-carbonated waters in Serbia, is bottled in Vlasinka d.o.o. plant at Mt. Vlasina. In Serbia, we operate through 4 distribution centers – Niš, Novi Sad, Čačak and Paraćin.

At the end of 2018, the Coca-Cola system celebrated a half a century of operating in Serbia, and this period was also marked by significant acquisitions:

In 2005, Rosa became a member of the Coca-Cola system after the takeover of Vlasinka d.o.o.

In 2006, the Coca-Cola system in Serbia acquired 100 percent of Fresh&Co from Subotica and the neXt brand

The most recent in a range of large-scale acquisitions was the takeover of confectionery giant Bambi, In February 2019, by our partner – Coca-Cola HBC AG.

The same year, Merima Kruševac was privatized and this is to the present day considered to be one of the most successful privatization in Serbia.
